Seeking information on Washington Park vandals

The Springfield Park District has been seeing a rash of vandalism at Washington Park over the past few weeks.

Derek Harms, executive director of the park district, said Tuesday that someone damaged the bathroom near the pavilion and broke into the tennis pro shop, though nothing was taken.

Construction equipment also has been broken into, and graffiti was spray-painted near the entrance to the park.

Harms did not have a dollar estimate of the damage.

He said youths are believed to be responsible for the damage, but there is no hard evidence to back up that assumption. He added that the park district is asking people who live near the park to report any suspicious activity.

"We have an active police department that is patrolling the parks. We work closely with Leland Grove and the city of Springfield to help address some these issues. But really, one of our biggest tools out there is the neighbors," Harms said.

Anyone with information on the vandalism can submit tips anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 788-8427 or online at www.cashfortips.us. Tips can also be sent by text. Type TIP672 plus a message and send to CRIMES. Informants are eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000.
