On the May 22, 2007 at 3:48 am the Sangamon County Central Dispatch System received a 9-1-1 call in reference to a black male that was lying in the roadway at the intersection of 5th and South Grand. The male was bleeding and was not breathing. Multiple motorists had stopped to give the male, later identified as Alfred W Dixon (DOB 06/15/1957), chest compressions while the Springfield Fire Department, America Ambulance, and the Springfield Police Department were en route. These life saving efforts were continued while Alfred was transported to St. Johns Hospital. At St. Johns, Emergency Room Personnel located two gunshot wounds and it was determined that the injuries from the wounds were life threatening. He was placed on life support however he was pronounced deceased on May 26, 2007.

Alfred was a reliable employee of McDonalds at 501 South Grand Ave East. Often times he would arrive at work before his scheduled shift began at 5:00am to clean outside the building. Alfred was wearing his work uniform when this incident occurred. It was confirmed that Alfred left his apartment shortly before this incident and was walking to work that morning.

Sgt Brian Oaks was the lead investigator in this case in which hundreds of hours were spent attempting to determine who was responsible for the homicide of Alfred Dixon. To this date, no suspects have been identified although it is believed that someone in the community might have information which could lead to the identification and arrest of the perpetrator.

Crime Stoppers is offering $5000 for information which leads to the arrest of the person responsible for the shooting and death of Alfred Dixon. This is only one of the “cold case” homicides Crime Stoppers is hoping to get information on to assist investigators in solving cases and making arrests. All anonymous information must be submitted to Crime Stoppers before 9/30/16 to be eligible for the enhanced reward of $5000. After that date, the reward for this and other homicides will revert to the $1000 maximum.
