This week Crime Stoppers is seeking information to assist the Springfield Police Department in reference to a burglary and criminal damage report. On November 13th and 17th ,in the early morning hours, police responded to White Oaks Mall, 2501 Wabash , in reference to several thousand dollars’ worth of damage being done to the inside of the building. Once inside, the suspects, who appear to be teenagers, damaged windows, fixtures, water pipes, and discharged fire extinguishers throughout the building. If photos become available they will be posted on this website, cashfortips.us. During the overnight hours of September 7th, three businesses in Springfield were burglarized and police believe there were at least two people involved in the burglaries. The doors of Darcy’s Pint, Capitol City Bar and Grill, and West Side Pub and Grill at Donnie B’s, one after the other, were forcibly entered. Once inside the perpetrators caused substantial damage to video gaming machines, automatic teller machines, and safes. They were able to escape with a substantial sum of money when the losses at all three burglaries were totaled.

The Springfield Police Department is investigating a burglary to the Burger King located on Veterans Parkway near White Oaks Mall which occurred during the overnight hours of August 23rd . Crime Stoppers is looking for tips to help solve this crime and close this case. The incident occurred between 1 and 2 am when a thin male made entry to the business and was able to defeat the safe and escape the business prior to the arrival of police. Although surveillance video did not provide police with a clear image that can be identified, investigators believe there is someone who can provide that identifying information or other details about the commercial burglary and theft.

On August 23rd between noon and 1pm while a state employee was walking during her lunch break near Pasfield and Cedar Street, a male subject jumped from behind a bush and knocked the pedestrian to the ground. As she fell, the victim maintained ahold of the cell phone she had in her hand, however, while on the ground the perpetrator forcefully grabbed the phone from her hand and ran eastbound. The suspect was described as being a tall, thin black male in his 20’s or 30’s who was wearing a dark T-shirt and jeans. The stolen phone was a black I-Phone 7 plus in a black case.

For the second consecutive week, the focus on the Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week centers on a shooting incident in Springfield and again, Crime Stoppers is seeking tips from anyone who has information about this homicide. On August 18th,  25 year old Reginald Day was shot as he left Total Essence Barber Shop at 821 E Cedar in Springfield.

On August 12 at the 1700 block of E Edwards, 29 year old Eric Robertson was shot by one of two unknown persons who approached the residence at approximately 1100 a.m. with handguns drawn. The motive for the shooting is not known however, several shots were fired leaving the victim mortally wounded. Crime Stoppers is offering a $5000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this homicide as we now do for all homicides in Sangamon and Menard Counties. This huge jump from a one thousand dollar maximum reward to a $5000 maximum was part of our effort to help end the senseless violence that occurs all too often.

Sangamon County Sherriff Investigators are looking for leads to help identify the person responsible for a burglary to Ma Ma Lee’s Sandbar Tavern on Mechanicsburg Road just outside Springfield in the early morning hours of July 25th. A lone suspect, whose image was captured in surveillance video, pried a door open to gain entry to the business and used a concrete circular saw to open a video gaming machine and an ATM in the burglary. Although extensive damage resulted from his attempt, the perpetrator left the business without accessing any money from the machines or from the business.

Areas in and around Springfield have been plagued by burglaries to motor vehicles all summer. This week, however, Crime Stoppers wants to discuss a specific problem related to these burglaries in hopes that you can help police identify the thieves. There has been a noticeable increase in cases in which suspects burglarizing a vehicle were able to steal a key fob or a spare set of keys to another vehicle and then return to steal the vehicle they had the key for.

Chatham Police are looking for information about a commercial burglary at Discount Tobacco on Main Street in Chatham and Crime Stoppers could use your tips to help solve this crime. On July 23rd shortly after 11 p.m., an unknown person smashed a window to gain entry to the business and – once inside – stole several cartons of Newport cigarettes and the cash register which contained a small amount of currency. Images of the suspect were captured from surveillance video which showed the suspect to be wearing black shoes with white trim at the bottom and light colored blue jeans with a pattern on the back pockets. The suspect wore a dark hoodie over his shirt to conceal his identity.

In our weekly Crime of the Week news spots we try to bring attention to criminal incidents which have occurred in hopes that you can come forward with information to help police solve these crimes. Thankfully, you’ve stepped up in record numbers with information and we’re well on our way to our biggest year ever - and we’re not slowing down.

This week we want to recognize and thank our friends in the media who are a vital part of the success of Crime Stoppers. Local news outlets get our messages to you every week, and without this support, our program probably wouldn’t exist.
