On 9/30/10 at 3:22 pm Officers were called to the 3800 block of South 2nd Street in Springfield for a one vehicle accident in which a car had run off the road into a corn field. Deputies arrived and found James L Jones (M/B 08/04/77) inside the vehicle unresponsive. He was transported to Memorial Medical Center where it was determined that he had been the victim of a fatal gunshot wound, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Investigators determined that multiple shots had been fired at the 4000 block of Treviso Drive in the parking lot of an apartment complex so the homicide was investigated by the Springfield Police Department. Springfield Police located witnesses who observed a blue van occupied by two black males in the area prior to the shooting. A witness also reported that one black male ran to the van after the shots were fired. The van was observed driving out of the apartment complex parking lot following the victim James Jones’ vehicle.
Investigator Mike Flynn is the lead investigator in this case and has been unable to gather information to hold the persons responsible for this shooting accountable for their actions. He has pursued all leads to this point and as of 5/31/16 there are no remaining leads to follow up on.
Crime Stoppers is offering $5000 for information which leads to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the shooting and death of James Jones. This is the second “cold case” homicide Crime Stoppers is presenting to the public in hopes of generating leads which will assist investigators in solving homicide case’s and making arrest(s). Crime Stoppers will pay $5000 cash for any information which leads to the arrest of any persons responsible for past homicides in Sangamon and Menard Counties. After that date, the reward for this and other homicides will revert to the $1000 maximum Crime Stoppers reward.
